ENERGINET.DK chooses Nexans aluminium XLPE cables
Nexans’ aluminium XLPE underground cables will be used to provide the 400 kV element in a project to connect the Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm to the Danish grid
Paris, February 11, 2015 – Denmark’s Kriegers Flak offshore windfarm is to be securely connected to the national grid with Nexans’ 400 kV aluminium XLPE cables. The contract, worth around €7 million is part of the grid connection for the largest wind farm in Denmark with 600 MW capacity.
Nexans will manufacture and supply 57 km of 400 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cables. The XLPE cables are part of an underground system that will connect the Kriegers Flak offshore windfarm to the Danish grid. The cables produced by Nexans will connect the substations Ishøj and Hovegård, running a length of approximately 19 km.
Nexans will also supervise the installation process. The cables have an aluminium conductor and aluminium screen. This approach offers an optimized total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to traditional options. ENERGINET.DK chose Nexans because of its cost effective technical solution, as well as the ability to manage the project while adhering to the customer’s particular conditions.
Torben Glar Nielsen, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at ENERGINET.DK, said, “We are looking forward to working with Nexans. It is important to have a partner who understands the technical needs of the project and has the ability to complete it.”
ENERGINET.DK is also executing a national Cable Action Plan which involves dismantling 2,900 km of overhead lines and laying of 2,600 km cable by 2030. 900 km of underground cable have already been installed.
Nexans and ENERGINET.DK have previously worked together successfully on the Køge Bugt project, part of the national Cable Action Plan.
Cyprien Federspiel, VP Sales & Marketing Land High Voltage at Nexans added, “This contract is a continuation of the relationship between Nexans and ENERGINET.DK. We are enthusiastic to work with ENERGINET.DK on this Renewable Energy project to improve the Environment and help stabilize Denmark’s electricity grid.”
The Kriegers Flak offshore wind farm will be located in the Danish exclusive economic zone, 25 km east of the Island Møn in the Baltic Sea. The wind farm will have a capacity of 600 MW. The grid connection must be in operation by the end of 2018. Cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ plant in Charleroi, Belgium.
